The First Six Weeks

When I was pregnant and it was decided that I should leave my job to stay home with our children, I was looking for ways to reduce expenses. It didn’t take me long to realize that cloth diapers could play a major role in that equation. I will admit that I spent months reading and looking at pictures and trying to figure out what all of the diapering terms meant before I took a huge leap and actually ordered some. Disposables were fine for us with my older daughter and I’m not exactly a fan of laundry, so I was really having to wrap my head around the idea of washing diapers…and their contents. I kept referencing the Excel spreadsheet that I’d made, reassuring myself that the cost savings would be worth it. My sweet husband was on board from the beginning and actually mentioned it to one of his coworkers whose wife was pregnant with their second baby. The coworker raved about their bumGenius diapers, so that was my first purchase. When they arrived, I was in love with how cute they were and how soft they felt – I was delighted at the thought of putting something so gentle against my baby’s skin. The more I read, the more I realized that I would probably need some newborn sized diapers. I ordered Rumparooz Lil’ Joeys (love the darling …

Cloth Diapering at Six Weeks

My newborn cloth diapering experiments continue…can you tell how much I’m loving this?  At 6 weeks and roughly 11 ½ lbs he is still comfortably in the Happy Heinys.  The Bum Genius AIO Size XS and FuzziBunz XS Pockets are just starting to get a little snug, but still work very well.  I have added a couple of new diapers to my routine: Applecheeks Size 1, Thirsties Cover Size XS, Blueberry Mini Deluxe and Tots Bots Tiny Fit.  He has completely grown out of the Rumparooz Lil Joeys and the premie prefolds so they have been retired. Of this new group of diapers the Tots Bots Tiny Fit is my favorite.  It is a great fit with room to grow, the inside is super soft against him and the fact that you don’t have to unstuff them prior to washing is a great bonus.  We haven’t had any leaking though it is a very trim diaper.  I give a definite thumbs-up on this diaper.  It has prompted me to take a look at the Tots Bots Easy Fit for down the road when he’s wearing one size diapers. The Blueberry Mini Deluxe is an incredible diaper.  It is very similar to the Happy Heiny in that it is a mini one-size.  It has snaps to adjust the rise like a one-size, but it is just smaller (hence the name mini).  …

Passing Down the Diapers to Little Bro

I am a 28 year old stay at home mom of two beautiful boys, ages 2 and 4 months!  We have been cloth diapering since my oldest was about 9 months old and we love it! Since my oldest, Bennett, was already 9 months old when we began cloth diapering, we only had a stash of bumGenius OS, Smartipants OS, a few petite FuzziBunz, some OS fitteds, and some WAHM OS AI2s.  When we found out we were pregnant with number 2 and my oldest son was still in cloth diapers, I had to make a decision.  We obviously needed more cloth diapers, but I wasn’t sure what to buy!  I researched and just couldn’t decide what to use.  Should I buy some newborn diapers for our baby to wear for a short time?  I mean, I knew he would be a big baby (and he was!  8 lbs, 10 oz!) and he wouldn’t wear newborn diapers for long.  I didn’t know if I would like prefolds and covers, but that seemed to make the most sense.  Amazingly, we were very lucky to receive some newborn prefolds, fitteds, and Bummis and Thirsties covers from a couple of friends.  I also bought a couple of Lil’ Joeys AIOs….you know, for pictures!  :o) When our second son, Donovan, was first born, I tried the Lil’ Joeys and also prefolds and covers and …

Newborn Cloth Diapering

After months of hypotheticals, estimating, researching and best guesses I finally get to put my newborn cloth diaper stash to work!  My little guy arrived in early February and my first go at true newborn cloth diapering has begun (my daughter was already 4 months when I first started cloth diapering her).  Since there have been a lot of discussions and questions about newborn cloth diapering on this blog and on the Diapershops’ Facebook page I thought I might try to give you my real-time, as-I-go experiences to give moms of newborns (or soon to be) an idea of what they might encounter in the first weeks and months.  To give you as much info as possible, my little man was 7 lbs 12 ounces and 20 ½ inches at birth.  I put his first cloth diaper on him at two weeks.  My hat is off to all of you moms that start right away (even in the hospital!) but I gave myself a little leeway and waited until life started to have some sort of normalcy before going all cloth. Two Weeks Old: At two weeks he is now 8 lbs 10 ounces and 21 ½ inches.  His umbilical stump is still on so the only diapers that I have that will go under his stump are the Rumparooz Lil Joeys and the Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Cover.  I love …
