Four Things NOT to Say to a Cloth Diapering Parent

Let’s face it, haters gonna hate. Haters can rain down negativity on any number of things, and the topic of cloth diapering is no exception. Usually, I try to let negative comments about my parenting choices roll off my back, but certain things really push my buttons. One of the topics that gets under my skin a little bit is my choice to cloth diaper. It’s not for everyone, and I totally get that. However, when people (strangers/acquaintances and good friends/family alike) say certain things to me I just have to say something. I just can’t let it go. I don’t mean to get defensive, but I feel like certain injustices just can’t be tolerated. So here is a short list of things not to say to a cloth diapering parent: “Pssh, it’ll never last.” Okay, pessimistic much? I’m making the conscious choice to do something that will save me money, help the environment, and help keep unnecessary chemicals off of my baby. Just because you don’t think you could manage an extra load of laundry every other day doesn’t mean that I can’t. How about you be supportive of my choice? I’m not making you do it, so why rain on my parade? If you don’t have anything nice or supportive to say either be civil or change the topic of conversation. “Ugh, you’re just doing it because it’s …

Clothaholics Anonymous

Hello there! You look a little lost… Oh, you’re looking for the Mother’s Meeting? I’m so sorry, but they meet here in the Library on Tuesdays. Tonight it is “Clothaholics Anonymous”. What’s that – you’ve never heard of Clothaholics Anonymous? Well, we do tend to be a little shy about our, er, problem; but certainly you’ve met clothaholics before. They look just like your average citizen. Take Molly over there, for instance. Positively glowing, isn’t she! She’s only got a few weeks left before her first little one is due. She jumped on the cloth diapering bandwagon early, just a few days after her first positive pregnancy test. Things really went crazy, though, when she hit the nesting phase. Let’s just say she is now Prepared, with a capital P – who can blame her, though. Those itty bitty dipes are to die for. Her husband realised she had a problem when he came home from work one evening and discovered her in the nursery, practising snappying prefolds on a Cabbage Patch Kid. Then there’s Gloria, in the corner with the knitting project. Gloria started with good old PUL covers, but for her they were a gateway diaper, leading her to the world of wool. She planned to try a pair of wool shorties on her daughter “just one time”, but who can stop once they begin, right? She then …

Terrified Daycare Director

I am one of those mothers that caught onto cloth diapering late in the game.  My first child wore disposables.  When my daughter was born I started looking into cloth diapers.  I realized that cloth diapers had changed so much over the years and decided that I could definitely do this.  My next thought was the daycare.  Would they be willing to use cloth diapers?  All of the people that I knew that used cloth diapers were stay at home Moms.  Were daycare centers willing to use them?  I made the call and the daycare Director told me that they didn’t have a problem with it, but she said they “won’t do anything with the poop so maybe you should consider using disposables just for daycare.” She sounded terrified.  Were diapers really that scary? I thought long and hard throughout my maternity leave about whether to go forward with this or not.  My biggest concern was actually the daycare.  I realize that I pay them so they should use whatever products I require on my baby.  However, I know that they are incredibly busy woman and I didn’t want to put them out too much either.  I came up with a plan that I think is ideal for cloth diapering at daycare. bumGenius 4.0 pocket diapers were the first step in the plan.  I bought many of them with hook …
