Cloth Diapering in Winter

Are there things I need to do differently while cloth diapering in the winter? The answer: Yes and no.  The basics of cloth diapering is the same no matter what season we are in.  A clean, dry diaper goes on and once its soiled, you want to change it as soon as possible.  During the summer, you want to be extra cautious that baby doesn’t sit in a hot, moist diaper for too long which can cause diaper or heat rash. And during the winter, you want to make sure to keep baby’s bum extra moisturized due to the dry air. (dry skin = itchy skin. No fun for baby!) Here is what I suggest to keep in mind during the winter: Use cloth friendly moisturizer with every change. We find that our sweet baby’s bum gets little dry patches on the cheeks during the winter. To combat this, we use coconut oil with every diaper change. Be sure to apply liberally, especially after bath time and before bed. Dry skin on the bum causes baby to itch it which can cause irritation especially when sitting in a soiled diaper. *Tip: After bath time, lather baby up with your moisturizer of choice and let them lay naked on a towel for a few minutes.  Allowing them to air out is super important and my little one LOVES this part of …

The (Bittersweet) End of a Cloth Diaper Journey

After almost half a decade of using cloth diapers, the end is nearly upon us!  Most moms are absolutely ecstatic that their days of diapering are coming to an end, but only cloth families will understand the bittersweet twinges I have each time I walk by my stash drawer.  Every successful trip to the potty is one more step away from adorable fluffiness.  We still use cloth for naps, nights, and outings (because feverishly sopping up urine in public sits very high on my List of Nopes), but we are diaper free most of the time now. Disposables moms are breathing sighs of relief as I’m having intense internal debates.  What should I keep?  What should I sell?  Should I donate?  Do other cloth moms feel this need to hoard and cling to diapers that we no longer really need? Why do I feel so attached to poop catchers? Let me tell you why, my sisters and brothers of cloth. My beautiful babies were born soft and fragile but perfect and smelling like flowers.  Of course there was spit up and gas and poop (so much poop), but the precious purity of a fresh-out-of-the-womb baby cannot be matched by anything in the world.  Yet we still spend the first couple years of our kids’ lives doing all we can to enhance and preserve their cuteness and innocence.  We steal kisses …

The Underwear Diaper

Summer in our household means baby boy running around in shoes, a diaper, and a t-shirt. It is fun for mama to see him run around with his cute fluffy butt that usually spends 7-9 months out of the year covered in pants.  Often times I get excited about people’s facial reactions when they see a baby in a cloth diaper. But my favorite reaction had to be the one my young neighbor had when he saw my sons diapers for the first time.  We were all outside on the sidewalk playing. My 6 year old neighbor stopped what he was doing and with a quizzical look asked, “Why does his diaper have underwear on it?”  Excitedly, I told him it was not underwear. It was a cloth diaper (BumGenius Freetime). Unfortunately for me, this was a concept my young neighbor could not grasp. Instead he followed my son around studying his “underwear diaper.” I admit I was a little too interested in this kids opinion of a cloth diaper. When it was finally time to pack up and head inside, my 6 year old neighbor said goodbye with a final statement, “It has a lot of buttons.”  He said this was a sigh, as if the prospect of underwear with buttons was too overwhelming.  I had a good laugh as this young boy had the reaction of almost everyone …
