I Forgot About My Dirty Diaper, What Do I Do?

We all have one diaper that we forgot about for a day or two or even a week or so it happens to all cloth diapering mothers at least once. I see the question what should I do when I find a forgotten diaper? I am sad when some ask if they should toss it. You have to try to save the diaper. Cheapie or a Jules with perfect bum placement it can be saved. My first suggestion is to open the diaper. Yes it’s going to smell so be prepared but if there’s no poop in it it’s probably going to be easy fix. If it stinks strongly of ammonia it can be fixed. So open that bad boy up. No code brown? Then proceed directly to washing machine start by rinsing the diaper. Sniff it if you dare. If it still smells strongly off ammonia I suggest you take a scoop of oxyclean with your regular cloth diaper detergent and wash it on hot. Throw in some towels for added friction and so you don’t waste your time and detergent make sure to do an extra rinse. Sniff it. No more ammonia? Problem solved. If you don’t want to wash it with some towels do a short cycle by itself on hot with oxyclean and cloth diaper detergent and then toss it in with diaper laundry. Now to …

Surviving Cloth Diapers

Not everyone believes they are capable of cloth diapering, and as much as I told myself that I had the guts to do it, reality is that it is something that I have struggled with. It can be hard at times! So here it is; “My Not So Obvious, Crucial But Not Necessary, But Really Totally Imperative Pointers To Cloth Diapering”. Or, “Surviving Cloth Diapers”. Get ones that you think are cute and you really like. There will come a time when cloth diapering will be exhausting and you just wont want to do it. It helps when you have cute diapers that you are excited about, that way you enjoy it and don’t go back to using disposables. Pick one or two brands that you love and stick with them. It’s okay to try a bunch of diapers out at first but try to weed out the brands you aren’t the craziest about. There are a couple of reasons for this, the first being that for caregivers and significant others it’s just easier to learn how to put on one type of diaper. The more styles you have the more confusing it becomes. The second reason is; if you are like me, you might get a little obsessed. If you only have one or two brands you stick with, you will be less tempted to buy all the diapers …

Every time I attend a Baby Shower, I want to treat mama and baby to something special. I hope my gift will be fun, useful, and thoughtful. Extended Cloth Diapering

Most parents excitedly count down the days until their child is ready to potty learn. They can’t wait for their diapering days to be over. Yet for some kids the typical potty training age comes and goes. Whether its due to medical or developmental challenges some children may spend a few extra years (or possibly forever in diapers). Yet pull ups and larger sizes of disposable diapers can get incredibly expensive, placing a huge financial burden on families that are usually cash strapped as is. Sadly in these situations cloth is often overlooked as an option. Some families fear that cloth diapering will be too expensive or too much work. Others simply didn’t even know about cloth diapering at all. Because of my son’s medical condition we have had to explore our options for the future and have found a variety of options. When the problem is simply that a kiddo is too big for typical “one size” cloth diapers sized diapers and adjustable absorbency trainers fit the bill. Brands like Thirsties and Blueberry have a size 2 diapers that fits a 40 pound child comfortably. Fuzzibunz also also offers a XL that will fit 40-55 pounds and a xxl that will fit 50-70 pounds. Adjustable absorbency trainers and special night time trainers may also be an option (sewn in soaker trainers alone won’t replace a diaper but doublers can …

Supporting One Another: A Thank You

I’m nothing if not an organized planner. I spent at least twenty hours researching cloth diapers on the Internet before I even bought one. I spent the first months of my son’s life, stalking the DiaperShops Facebook page (the precursor to the Cloth Diaper Support Group) while nursing through the night. I read every question and every comment. I learned the lingo, I learned how to handle toddler poo though my first was only weeks old; I learned to troubleshoot laundry problems I wasn’t having. I was ready for anything. I could answer what to do if you experienced repelling; I knew the advantages and disadvantages of AIOs, fitteds, pockets, and flats without even trying them. I was smug in my knowledge that through all my research I chose the best option and since I had no problems, I would have none. Cloth diapering was easy. After all, I didn’t have leaks or stinks. Until, of course, I did. We moved to South Texas and I got an HE washer and the rest is a stinky melodrama of failed wash routines and frustrated Cloth Diaper Support Group posts. Post after post, I became repetitive and increasingly exasperated. It’s the post we’ve seen time and time again; the posts that always get answered even if the answer is often the same one over and over again. And that, my friends, is …
