Black Friday Buzzzzz Day

One thing my husband and I recently started doing more of was mentioning what we’re thankful for, that way if there’s a trivial bump in the road it really puts things in perspective. With it being the season of giving thanks, I realized how thankful I am to be a cloth diapering mom for several reasons.

  1. I’m thankful I can save more money. With all the expenses of having kids, who couldn’t use a bit extra each month to put towards other necessities?
  2. I’m thankful to be doing my part helping the environment. With so much emphasis on being green put on the importance of future generations, I feel it would be ironic if I was raising a future generation without doing all I could to make their lives better.
  3. I’m thankful my daughter rarely has a diaper rash (and she is too!). It seems like disposables and diaper cream go hand I hand; luckily we’re still on our first bottle of diaper cream 22 months later…another cost-saving measure.
  4. I’m thankful I have choices in diapering. Pampers and Huggies have nothing on the cute colors and prints my daughter gets to wear!
  5. I’m thankful I don’t have to buy diapers when our second baby arrives soon. Notice I said “have to” – doesn’t mean that this cloth diaper addict won’t though.
  6. I’m thankful I can sell or donate cloth diapers when we’re done having children. Anyone up for buying a used disposable? Didn’t think so.
  7. I’m thankful I’ve changed other parents’ lives. When other moms have seen how easy cloth diapering can be, they’ve made the switch so I’m preventing even more disposables from entering the landfill.
  8. I’m thankful to support small businesses, especially as a SAHM of a self-employed husband. Between retailers and manufactures, the cloth diaper community is full of small business owners.
  9. I’m thankful to have given birth at a hospital that cloth diapers. Introducing parents to cloth diapering from day one is good all around.
  10. I’m thankful I don’t have to deal with blow-outs! Enough said.

Ann J. is a cloth diaper fanatic and mom to a 22-month-old girl with the cutest cloth diaper butt on the block!

I was a little slow to the whole cloth diapering thing (I started with my second child when she was about 9 months old), but since I’ve switched, a whole new world of better, cooler solutions to everyday problems has opened up. And like you, I want to share this new world with people all around me. Only, I’ve come to find that cloth diapering is harder to talk about than I thought. It is not that people won’t listen as much as it is that people don’t even know what to ask, where to start, or that they don’t already know everything there is to know about it. And as a newbie to the overwhelming options of cloth diapering, I sometimes don’t even know how to give them the run down without ending up confusing them, losing their interest, or reminding them of their misguided assumptions about cleaning poop off diapers.

So, I’ve come up with a fool proof approach to talking about cloth diapering. I think it opens up the conversation a bit so that those who are at all interested can better formulate their questions and so that I don’t start rambling about things they aren’t interested in. It’s my, “surprised?! me too” approach.

When I mention that I cloth diaper and I get that puzzled look like “really, are you off your rocker, why would you do that to yourself.” I express that I am just as surprised as they are. I admit that I never thought I’d cloth diaper and that not only did I surprise myself, but that cloth diapers have surprised me too!

It is a great segue into discussing what is so wonderful about cloth diapering while avoiding the all too condescending discussion about disposables. Depending on the time and setting I then go on to explain the following surprises:
- After 6 months of cloth diapering I am still surprised at how fresh and dry my daughter’s bottom is when I change her. I didn’t expect it, but after a day of cloth diapering I knew I couldn’t go back.
- I am surprised that cloth diapering feels more like pampering my daughter. Not only does she stay so dry and fresh, but I feel so good about wrapping her in a soft fluffy diaper after bath time or before bedtime.
- I am surprised at how much I like having different diapering options. I love being able to tailor my girl’s diaper to her situation. I can put her in a breathable fitted if she has any sign of irritation, or use a less absorbent diaper for those filler times between bath and bedtime.
- I am surprised at how liberating it is to not care how many times a day I change a diaper. When my daughter poops in a diaper only minutes after changing her I’m surprised at how little it bothers me (unless of course we are trying to run out the door, but I guess no one can have it all)
- I am surprised at how good it feels to do the budget each month and to leave the diaper line empty.

And the list could go on. As long as I don’t make unrealistic claims (such as over exaggerating how little time it takes to wash or how those extra changes throughout the day just get done by themselves) I’ve found that most people I talk to are intrigued and recognize my sincerity. While I haven’t won anyone over yet, I can tell that in some friends a seed has been planted. Where they used to think that cloth diapering was uncomfortable for the baby or that there were very few options, they quickly learn from my “surprised?! Me too” approach that cloth diapering isn’t what they thought it was either. And maybe they’ll ask more questions the next time they meet a cloth diapering mom, or maybe, just maybe they’ll surprise themselves and cloth diaper their next kid too.

Cloth Diapering. Surprised?! Me too

Brian W. – Cloth Diapering Just Like You!

Brian W. lives in Cypress, TX and is dad to Grace (4), Haven (2.5), Josias (1) and Immanuel (11 months). This stay-at-home dad certainly has his hands full! Find out what Brian has to say about diapering, fatherhood and everything in between:

What is the #1 reason you cloth diaper your baby? To save money! Some friends gave us a "diapers for a year" gift certificate to buy disposables when we brought home our baby boys. But with two babies in diapers and one in training pants, that really only equaled free diapers for four months. We decided to dive in and try cloth. So far it has been a good choice for our family.

Who has been your biggest cloth diapering supporter/ cheerleader? Well, I must admit it was my wife's idea. I am a stay-at-home dad, but my wife, being a teacher, is the kind of mom that does lots of research on everything to do with parenting. When she suggested cloth diapers I said, “lets go for it!” She knew that if it was going to work we needed it to be hassle-free. She did lots of research to find "dad" friendly cloth diapers.

What is your favorite diaper and why? We use Kissaluv's One-Size All in One Diaper. It was the closest thing we could find to a cloth version of a disposable diaper. They are easy to use, easy to clean, and the one-size-fits-all means they will take our boys through to potty training (or maybe to another baby?).

If you had one superhero power, what would it be and why? 360-degree vision so that I can watch all four of my children as they move in 400 different directions.

Describe your parenting style using three words. Be there now.

What is one product you absolutely can't live without! My super, airtight diaper pail. I didn't want to spend extra money on a glorified bucket so I used a pail meant to hold pool chlorine tablets. It has a great airtight screw on lid so it keeps in the stink. It holds one wash load worth of diapers (when it’s full I know it’s time to wash) and best of all - it was free!

How do you think being a father has changed you? It has caused a 180-degree change in my priorities. I was married for nearly 19 years when we adopted our first child. Until that time I was concerned about establishing my identity and working towards achieving my personal accomplishments. Ironically, it has been through the adoption of my daughter that I discovered my identity as a father first and as a proponent of adoption second. My concerns are no longer self-centric - my four children come first. I never knew that I had the capacity for so much love. I can love four children, my wife and myself and still have more to give to parentless children.

November Spotlight Dad

I lay down my little one to change her fluffy diaper to find a terrible rash spreading from her diaper area down her legs and up her trunk. I couldn’t fathom what would have caused such a terrible, splotchy rash. My daughter has very sensitive skin and would have very slight redness in her chubby rolls from time to time, but never anything I would even consider calling diaper rash. Was it an allergic reaction? I couldn’t think of anything we had done differently that day to cause such a bad rash, but I racked my brain over and over trying to figure it out.

I cleaned her up and loaded her bottom with Grandma El’s diaper remedy and a fleece liner to protect my diapers from too much of a good thing (even though Grandma El’s is cloth diaper friendly, I still like to protect my precious fluff). Making sure to change her frequently, the rash was not subsiding, but instead getting worse and spreading. I made an appointment that day to see her doctor.

Because her signs and symptoms didn’t line up with any one diagnosis, the doctor told us to watch it and keep her as clean and dry as possible. She recommended loading her up with Aquafor and/or Desitin. Knowing neither of these were going to come anywhere near my cloth diapers, I headed to the store to pick up some gDiaper biodegradable inserts to use in my Flip covers. I was still very careful not to spread the “unsafe” creams too far out onto her legs or trunk in order to protect the Flip covers.

Another day and it wasn’t getting much better. I knew I needed to extend the cream onto her legs and trunk too in order to protect her poor skin. Because I didn’t want to risk anything non-cloth diaper friendly getting on the Flip covers, I drove myself to our local Target to pick up a small package of as baby and Earth friendly disposable diapers as I could find.

Much to my dismay, there were no baby friendly or Earth friendly diapers available for me to purchase. It had been over 6 months since I had stepped foot down the disposable aisle at Target because we were using 100% cloth. I had no idea you could only buy name brand, enormous packages of diapers. I wasn’t about to buy 75 chemical laden diapers for my little girl. My hopes were that the rash would clear up much faster than the time it would take us to use all of those disposable diapers. I knew I had seen Seventh Generation diapers at the grocery store, so we left Target and stopped there on the way home to pick up a small package of more Earth and baby friendly disposables.

I kid you not, not 20 minutes into wearing her first disposable in 6 month, she had a poopy diaper that extended out the legs and up the back of the diaper. It was bedtime and my little girl was crabby. Now I had to not only change her diaper again (which, if you have an 8 month old, you know is next to impossible), but I had to wipe her down and change her pajamas. Not a pleasant experience! I cursed the stupid disposables and the stupid rash that was wreaking such havoc on our day.

I used a combination of the Seventh Generation disposables and the gDiaper flushable inserts for another two days as the rash started to slowly get better. That first blow out was not the only one we experienced, unfortunately. Since going to 100% cloth 6 months ago, we had not experienced one poopy blow out. I had four in less than three days in disposables. Yuck.

We are still unsure what exactly caused the rash, but I’m happy to say it cleared up over night (literally) and my freshly cleaned, stuffed, and folded fluff stash was ready and waiting. While using disposables, I longed to use my cloth diapers. Not only are they cute, but my goodness do they do a better job. My mother-in-law even commented on how terrible the disposables were and how much better she liked using our cloth diapers.

In hindsight, 3 days is a very short time period, but boy did it feel like an eternity. Ironically, in that time period, a good friend of my converted to using cloth diapers so I was able to put some of my energy towards helping her out and getting her started down an addictive road. But that’s another blog post for another day.

Bio: Michelle is a part time stay at home mom to her 8-month-old daughter. When she isn’t reading cloth diapering blogs or scouring the Internet for fluff deals, she can be found reading, running, or out and about with her husband and baby girl.
