In case you missed it (or you don’t live in our home state of Maine!), DiaperShops owner, Kelly Wels, appeared this morning on Good Day Maine with three cloth diapering moms and babies to talk about modern cloth diapers! Two segments aired this morning during the 8:00 hour of the morning show. The first featured Kelly talking to the hosts about the benefits of using cloth diapers, discussing how easy it is and showing off a couple of the diapers. And the second brought the moms and baby “models” out to talk about how cloth diapering works for them. The show producers became interested in doing this segment after hearing about our recent survey of cloth diapering attitudes.

All in all, this was a fantastic, educational segment that promoted the benefits of cloth diapers to a mainstream audience and hopefully got some people to make the switch! The best part was that we got to have some REAL LIVE Maine moms and babies appear alongside Kelly to show how cloth diapers can work in real life.A HUGE special thanks to our families – Mama Amber and Baby Shea, Mama Lauren and Baby Eamon and Mama Jessica and Baby Annalise – for volunteering and arriving so early in the morning with smiling babies in tow! See below for some photos of our fun morning!

My sister-in-law recently had her first baby. After listening to her sister and her three sister-in-laws rant and rave over the wonderful pro's of using cloth she decided to register for some through Kelly's Closet's gift registry.

Even though not many of the other ladies purchased cloth diapers for her she knew her sisters would not leave her hanging. With all of us combined she received six Bum Genius OS 3.0 diapers in a variety of adorable colors, a dozen Indian prefolds, a twelve awesome homemade soakers (made with layers of microfiber and fleece), two cute covers in prints, and some wipe cubes.

Not bad for a starter stash, right?

What amazed me was the interest the other ladies, young and old, took in the diapers when she opened them at her baby shower. Especially the Bum Genius diapers! They had never seen anything like them before. They were amazed at how easy they were to use, how cute the colors were, and how far cloth diapering had come!

All of us girls in the room who already cloth diapered looked at each other happily because we enjoy any conversation that we can have about the benefits of cloth.

We are all confident that our "new recruit" will be happy she made the choice to cloth diaper and now out of the five of us (sister-in-laws) in the family we have all switched to cloth over the past two years!

Registering for cloth diapers for a baby shower

We have been on a mission to create the perfect one size diaper that is eco friendly and gentle on our babies, and practical and convenient to stand up with the hustle and bustle of our modern day world. During the past few months since the introduction of our Bumboo Pocket diaper we have had outstanding feedback from our retailers and customers. Many moms and dads have expressed their satisfaction with our natural inner pocket diaper and how pleased they are that they can finally go through the day without worrying about leaks.

The Bumboo Pocket Diaper offers everything we hoped for in a modern cloth diaper. The natural bamboo fleece is butter soft against baby’s skin and adds an additional layer of absorption. The included JoeyBunz insert is only 1/8 of an inch thick and made with a blend of hemp and organic cotton. And, due to the porous nature of the hemp, our JoeyBunz can handle the heaviest wetter and are not prone to compression leaks. We even took the Bumboo Pocket a step farther and added fleece gussets around the legs to allow air to flow under the waterproof PUL shell.

We have always wanted to keep our cloth diapers as trim as possible. And, we have had to make adjustments in the process. The original version of the Bumboo Pocket was designed to fit from 7-30 lbs. And, over time we realized that this weight range was not realistic for most families. So, after making some changes we have come out with the second version of the diaper, the Bumboo Pocket 2.0. One of the main changes in this version is an additional inch in the waist bringing the weight range up from 30lbs to 35lbs.

If you aren’t sure if the version you have is the original or the 2.0 there is an easy way to find out. All Bumboo Pocket Diapers with green or blue snaps are the original version. The 2.0 version is currently only available in our signature multi-colored snaps. If you have diapers with multi-colored snaps and are unsure if you have the original or the 2.0 then you must look at the control tag (small tag behind the large main tag). All Bumboo Pocket 2.0 version diapers will have this control number: TABKBP3-03-10. Remember, the original Bumboo Pocket Diaper is slightly smaller, but will still fit through most of your baby’s diapering years.

We hope this helps with any confusion there may be about our Bumboo Pocket cloth diapers and of course we are happy to answer any questions anyone may have! Just email us at info@babykicks.com.

The New, Improved BabyKicks One Size Bumboo Pocket Diaper

I can hardly believe it, but I have now been cloth diapering for two years – boy has time flown by! I clearly remember researching the various types and brands of cloth diapers before deciding on the bumGenius 3.0. I also remember my first cloth diaper purchase – the bumGenius One Size Diaper Sample Pack from Kelly’s Closet. I remember my first fluffy mail and the prep I did to get the diaper ready to try for the first time on my then 11 week old. Two years and countless fluffy mail deliveries later, I never looked back and am still cloth diapering full time.

Over the past two years I’ve tried countless diapers – bumGenius!, FuzziBunz, Thirsties, Kiwi Pie, goodmamas, Rumparooz, Blueberries, flats, prefolds, as well as several WAHM brands. I found some diapers to work great on my oldest son, but not so great on my youngest son and vice versa. Every child is different and diapers fit on them differently as well. Thanks to my involvement with The Cloth Diaper Whisperer as well as on line cloth diapering forums, I took many pictures of my boys in their fluff over the past two years. I’m so glad I did this, as it is fun to look back and watch them grow.

When I first began cloth diapering I was drawn to the pocket diaper for several reasons. I liked the ease of the aplix on the bumGenius diapers, as well as the quicker drying time when compared to many All In One style diapers. I liked how easy it was to prestuff the diapers before storage so that my husband could grab the cloth as easily as he did the disposable diapers. I used bumGenius 3.0 diapers exclusively on Brendan for a good 5 months or so before branching out and trying other brands and styles of cloth diapers. I am so glad that I did branch out and experiment with different styles – it really made cloth diapering fun and amazingly made me look forward to diaper changes! It’s always fun to choose which cute diaper to put on Brendan next, now that he’s reached the ripe old age of 2, he now chooses his own diaper.

When I first began my fluff addiction two years ago my husband didn’t think I would keep it up for more than a week or so. He’s commented several times since then that he’s glad I kept it up. Of course, he then comments on if my buying so many diapers did we really save any money? The answer to that is still yes. All I have to do is show him the price of a box of disposables at the store these days and he agrees with me. I will admit that I have purchased more than we really needed over the past two years, but cloth diapering became somewhat of a hobby in addition to a necessity for our growing boys.
Looking ahead at the future, I’m quite confident that our daytime diaper days are limited. I am beginning to see signs that Brendan, now 27 months old, will be ready to potty learn later this summer. These realizations are both exciting (I’ve been changing diapers for over 4 years now) as well as sad. My babies are growing up and the excitement of fluffy mail will be nothing more than memories. I’ll always be a cloth diapering advocate, and am excited about passing on my experiences cloth diapering with the next generation of cloth diapering families.
