What is one cloth diapering tip you wish you had gotten at the very start?
Don't get overwhelmed- there's a lot to learn! Choose the easiest type (for me, it was pockets) and go from there. There is always time to branch out. And don't feel guilty if you're not into the latest fad diaper… fads come and go, stick with what you like and don't feel you have to try everything.

What baby product could you not live without?

My baby carriers!!!! Mainly the Beco, but when the girls were smaller my wraps were indispensable. I would never make it without a good carrier.

What are your TOP 5 favorite websites?;;;;

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
The hugs and kisses I get when I come home from work; and the pride I feel when I see my older two growing into amazing young adults.

If you had a free day to yourself, what would you spend it doing?
I'd go into New York City and spend the morning exploring boutiques in the Village, pick up a good book and have lunch at my favorite restaurant, L'Express on 20th & Park. I'd eat a leisurely lunch of onion soup and a croque monsieur with nobody climbing on me, have a couple of Stella Artois and read my book. I'd go to the Cloisters museum for the afternoon and soak in the beautiful medieval artifacts. I'd finish off the day with a Middle-Eastern dance class at my teacher, Morocco's, studio.

What is your parenting style?
Laid back, attachment, mostly mellow, slow to anger but I'm too easily annoyed. I get over it quickly though. I tease my kids often and we laugh a lot. I'm the gooey-softie parent; my husband is a better disciplinarian than me.

What's your "go-to" dinner on a busy night? Sausage & peppers, baby!! YUM!

Many of you attended (or tried to attend) the Get Real Diapers party on Twitter last week. If this was your first experience on Twitter you might be a little intimidated. With over 1700 tweets in one hour from over 250 different people even I was a little lost at times. Here are some tips to help make your next Twitter party a little easier to follow.

1. How do I sign up for an account on Twitter? If you don’t already have a Twitter account you will need to set up an account. Visit and select Sign Up Now to create your very own account. You will need to select a Username, this can be your real name or a nickname of sorts. For instance my Twitter Username (or handle) is EcoMomMedia. Follow the directions on the screen and then select Create My Account. You are good to go! Of course if you want to get really creative you can customize your account with a picture and a background.

2. Who do I follow? If you want to join a Twitter party you will want to be sure to follow all of the party hosts and sponsors. There are several ways you can find the party hosts and sponsors on Twitter. If you are joining an Eco Mom Media party I have links on the party page that will take you directly to the hosts and sponsors. Another way is to search for them under Find People on Twitter. Once you have logged into your account select Find People and then enter @EcoMomMedia (or their Username). The @ sign will help you find a specific person if you know their Twitter Username. You can also search for them by name or email address. Once you find the person you want to follow you select Follow (it’s the person icon with a plus sign). Be sure to follow all of the party hosts and sponsors so you can see their tweets (or messages). You can follow people before the party begins to be sure you receive any party updates and to receive notifications of upcoming events. In addition, by following other party attendees you can network with a great group of people who share a same passion.

3. Do I have to pre-register? Most parties will encourage you to pre-register for the event. For Eco Mom Media Twitter parties there will almost always be extra prizes or incentives for pre-registering. While you don’t have to register to attend the party and learn about the topic; that is the list I normally use to draw the winners.

4. How do I follow 1700 tweets in an hour? Well that’s not even easy for the hosts and sponsors to do. Most people use some external sites to follow the party. Sites such as and will make it easier to follow the chatterings of the event. My personal favorite is TweetGrid; I prefer TweetDeck if I’m following on my iPhone. For TweetGrid you can create a unique party grid by entering the party #Hashtag, party hosts, and your username. A #hashtag is specific to the party or event topic. For instance, if you are joining the Diaper Shops twitter party the #hashtag would be #DiaperShops. After you enter all of the information and select Join Party a tweet grid will appear. To tweet you enter your username and password at the top (under the message or tweet) and begin tweeting. It’s very important to remember to use the #hashtag because the sponsors and hosts will only be looking for messages that include that tag during the party.

5. What can I say in a tweet? A tweet is limited to 140 characters so your messages will need to be brief. You can follow the number of characters you have in red after the tweet box. Watch the hosts of the party to determine the format for the party. Some parties are open while others are more structured. Structured parties will have one person (or a few people) tweeting questions for party goers to answer. Open parties are more like an open chat room with people asking different questions. Feel free to jump in regardless of the format with your questions.

6. Have an important question you would like to ask the hosts or sponsors? There are two ways you can get their attention. First, you can include their @UserName in your tweet. If you talk directly to a person they are more apt to respond and not miss your question in the sea of tweets. Another way is to send them a Direct Message (DM). A direct message is private and only that user can see your message. Host may not check their DMs during the party.

7. How do I win prizes? Most party hosts will announce how they are announcing/selecting/notifying winners. Some parties will draw random names by all active party tweets, some will draw names from the RSVP list, and others may require you to answer a question. Be sure to provide a valid @UserName when you register along with a valid email address. Hosts will attempt to contact you for a limited period of time (sometimes hours or days) before they select an alternate winner. You can see if someone has talked directly to you by checking your @UserName mentions (under Home on the sidebar) on your Twitter page. By clicking Direct Messages you can see if anyone sent you a message.

8. Reply! When a party host asks a question you can reply directly to that host by selecting reply next to their message. Or you can reply to other guests if you like what they have to say.

9. Retweet! Did someone say something that was valuable? You can retweet (RT) their message so that all of your followers can see the information. This is a great way to get your friends to join in the party with you.

10. When problems happen. Sometimes technology doesn’t cooperate with us. Sometimes TweetGrid will be acting slow and updates will be delayed. Sometimes Twitter will be at capacity and knock you off. Sometimes (if you are extra chatty) you can be put into Twitter jail. If you happen to experience difficulties while using Twitter or any of the external sites try to reply directly to the host/sponsor or reach out to a new Twitter friend for help. Other party quests may be able to respond more quickly than the host. Join the party a little early and play around.
Use the party #hashtag, practice sending replies, retweets, and direct messages.

Have fun! Your first party might be a little overwhelming but I promise it will get easier. Some parties move very quickly and you might miss something. Speak up, and someone will help you along the way. If for some reason you can’t figure it all out, most party hosts publish a transcript of their parties so you can go back and read it. Finally, if you have an important question that was unanswered…just email the host or sponsor directly.

Dummies Guide to Twitter Parties

There are so many great cloth diapering options out there, I want to draw your attention to one more! I believe people who decide to cloth diaper strive to get the best value for their money without sacrificing baby's comfort. What if you could combine the value of a prefold with the comfort/ease of a pocket diapers? Let me tell you how I did...

I love my pocket diapers. I adore the ease of using a pocket diaper as well as their ability to wick mosture away from baby's bum. My favorite and trusted night-time diaper is the bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diaper. I found the 100% polyester suedecloth used in them is wonderful for keeping baby dry for long periods of time. The only thing with these is that they can be a little more pricy when looking to use them all the time.

On the other hand I like the great value of my Chinese prefolds. They are relatively inexpensive and are often called the "work-horse" of a cloth diapering stash (I know they are mine). The downfall of these are that they don't usually hold up over night and you have to add liners to wick moisture away.

So, I decided to go searching for something that I could inexpensively add to my pre-existing stash (which largely includes Chinese prefolds and microfiber inserts) to give me the same functionality as my wonderful pocket dipes.

While searching I came across this amazing product that will do just that! It's called the bumGenius Stay Dry Insert Sock!

These insert socks have many benefits to them.

1. They are made of the same suedecloth used in my beloved bumGenius diapers. Essentially transforming my prefolds and extra microfiber inserts into pocket diapers when coupled with a good diaper cover (I prefer the one size Wonderwraps).

2. That's right, these insert socks are big enough to stuff a premium Chinese prefold or two inserts with ease.

3. These are great for using when you are out because like the popular two in one diaper systems, all you need to pack are a few pre-stuffed insert socks and an extra diaper cover and you're ready to go. This frees up valuable space in your diaper bag.

4. As I mentioned before, these are SO inexpensive (but very well made). If you already have prefolds/inserts and some diaper covers you can convert them with insert socks for a fraction of the cost it would be to buy all new pocket diapers. And in my opinion they work just as well!

When we were considering trying to conceive, being the analytical/engineer-type that I am, I started researching baby products and best buys. In my online searching, I came across the FuzziBunz website. I thought they were so darn cute and the thought of a baby without diaper rash had me knowing immediately that I was going to cloth diaper. My cloth diaper purchasing adventures began 9 months before we were even pregnant! LoL!

I love eBay and I love a bargain, so that’s the first place I looked hoping to find some great deals. I sure did! I ordered 10 new FuzziBunz Perfect Size Pocket diapers for $140, including shipping. The seller had a great rating and I was getting $4 off per diaper. I was so excited to get my first fluffy mail. I laid them out on the bed, admired the colors, and dreamed of using them as soon as we had a baby to use them on! Now, remember me mentioning these were purchased 9 months before I was even pregnant? Well, it wasn’t until about 18 months later that I pulled them out to be washed. By then, I had found Kelly’s Closet and began purchasing new diapers there as well. I love their sales, free shipping, etc. As soon as I pulled those “eBay Special” diapers out, I realized they were in fact not so special. They were fakes! Sure enough, my deal was too good to be true! The snaps were weak, the colors were “off”, and the inserts were thin and cheap. I was in shock because the FuzziBunz tag was impeccably authentic-looking. I had no way of knowing unless I had inspected them again when I started buying from a legitimate retailer like Kelly’s Closet.

After lots of research and contacting that seller, it soon became apparent that I would be eating the loss. The window for complaints was closed. The diapers aren’t really FuzziBunz so the manufacturer warranty does not apply. I was stuck with 10 crummy diapers for which I more than overpaid. My quest to save a buck just did not pay off. From that point on, eBay was for buying used video games for my husband, not diapers.

It was a hard loss for a master-bargain-finder like myself… and the hit to the budget was felt pretty hard. The lesson was learned… the hard way. I wasted time searching, lots of money, and then more time trying to recover the money. Some things, especially those things that are closest to your baby’s bum, just have to be the highest quality, guaranteed!

The peace of mind I have now buying my cloth diapering products guaranteed from Kelly’s Closet is very satisfying. One of the best parts though, besides getting cute fluffy goodness in the mail, is that I’m still getting great deals! For example, FuzziBunz had a cyber sale and Kelly’s Closet always gives customers a discount on bulk orders, so I saved above and beyond what the cyber sale offered! I also earned diaper dollars rewards to save money on a future order! Can you say sweet?!? It’s nice to know that I can in good conscience order the things my daughter needs and still afford to splurge thanks to great deals and free shipping. I love Kelly’s Closet. Need I say more?
