I have been cloth diapering my son for 8 months now. It took a lot of convincing to get my husband on board, but after several months we finally took the plunge. I wanted so badly to stay home with my boy, and we knew cloth diapers were a great way to save money.
After a lot of research, I bought the Kelly’s Closet Exclusive Gro Baby Complete Diapering Kit. I figured I should trust Kelly’s judgment when making my first purchase. The kit included everything I thought I would need.
At first sight I thought they looked so huge on him. His little baby 6 month jeans no longer fit him, and he couldn’t roll over onto his tummy because (I assumed) they were too bulky. I felt bad for him. Strike one.
I pressed on. I had quit my job and was staying home full time and looked forward to being able to cloth diaper “correctly.” I just couldn’t figure out why my little boy was constantly wetting himself. Every 2-3 hours or so I would find his tummy all wet. Strike two.
My good friend emailed the makers of Gro Baby and told them about my problem. They told us that the inserts would need to be “prepped” for much longer than I had originally thought. When I first got them in the mail I washed them and dried them four times and thought that would be enough. No, no, no…these babies need up to 10 full wash/dry cycles before they are fully prepped. So I worked on them…and WHOLLA! No more wetness!
After about 3 months of cloth diapering I found out I was expecting again. My son was 8 months old at the time and I just couldn’t believe it! The morning sickness brought an interesting perspective to the stinky smell that also accompanied my son’s new found diet of solid foods. That’s when I really began to actually hate cloth diapering. I didn’t own a diaper sprayer so I used an old rubber spatula to literally scoop the poop out of the diapers into the potty. It was disgusting! Strike three.
I cried and gagged every day for two weeks before my husband finally intervened and told me that I HAD to take a break from the cloth. I was so very relieved! However, deep inside I felt like a real failure because I had wanted it to work out so badly. I knew that cloth diapering was the right thing to do, but I just didn’t want to deal with the hassle.
About a month later someone from Kelly’s Closet asked me if I would help them out with a survey and in exchange I would get a gift certificate toward a purchase at their online store. Of course I said yes. With the gift I purchased a bumGenius diaper sprayer.
The diaper sprayer has been a real home run! I pulled out all of the cloth diapers once again and gave it another go. Would you believe that is just what I needed and I have never looked back. For three months now I have really enjoyed my Gro Baby diapers again thanks to the bumGenius diaper sprayer.
My son is now 13 months old and has learned how to maneuver himself in the diapers. I have also learned to buy him baby jeans that are just a size bigger and the diapers don’t look bulky to me anymore. We have gotten into a very awesome cloth diapering routine and I am so very happy.
The diaper sprayer has been a real winner for me and has provided a little comic relief too. When my hubby first used the sprayer he didn’t know which way to point it so when he pushed the button he totally gooshed himself in the face with water which surprised him. He also ended up getting poop everywhere because he was so busy trying to figure out how to use the thing.
At least now I really look forward to using cloth diapers on my second baby boy that is due May 31st!
