Our founder, Kelly Wels, was featured in an awesome article about cloth diapering in Raising Maine magazine.

In the article, Kelly talks about how she never intended to turn her shop into a cloth diapering boutique, but fate led her down that path 10 years ago! Here's a sampling of some of the items Kelly discussed with Raising Maine contributor, Patricia McCarthy. Be sure to check out the full article online.

RAISING MAINE: How is it that you're doing something you once would have mocked?
WELS: In 2001, I was a stay-at-home mom with two kids, and I wanted to bring in some grocery money. I had an idea to sell high-end baby clothing online. I just kind of knew that the Internet was going to be the wave of the future. So I bought a (domain name) site: I brought in some product, got the website going, and tried to sell it. For three or four months, nothing happened. I think I had one sale. Then a couple of women emailed me, asking if I'd carry a line of cloth diapers. I rolled my eyes and thought, 'You've got to be kidding me.' But, I did it, and within three days, all the diapers sold. So my next thought was, 'Hmm, maybe I'm onto something.' And this business kind of exploded from there. It was a real niche kind of thing, partly because there's no cloth diaper store you can go to.

RAISING MAINE: Had you ever tried cloth diapers before getting involved with this?
WELS: With my first child, I had all the intentions of using cloth diapers. My first husband grew up in a very natural way, with a very holistic lifestyle. And I'd have to say he was more into this than me. But I decided to give it a try. I used the really old-fashioned kind for two days and thought it was a nightmare. So it scared me off and we used disposables.

RAISING MAINE: What do your kids think about your job?
WELS: They think Mommy works too hard. I feel bad about this, but I'm doing much better than I used to. And I do feel like I'm teaching them to have a strong work ethic.

I had the luxury of 'test driving' the cloth pads that we offer through Kelly's Closet.

The Swaddlebees Mama Pads were by far my favorite. These cloth pads are well constructed; featuring top-stitching and the inside absorbent core sewn to the lining (so it doesn't shift around inside the pad while you're wearing it). The pads have a super soft bamboo velour top lining and fit perfectly for any need. The small size is great for light days, the medium and large size are wonderful for heavy or for overnight protection. I was amazed with the absorbency!

The Swaddlebees Mama Pads come in a wonderful variety of colors and they fold and snap into a small, clean package (with the inside lining concealed) - perfect for discreet carrying/storage on the go. When compared to disposable pads, these cloth pads ultimately provide a wonderful cost savings. They're not only great for the environment but they're far more comfortable making them worth the investment!

Your monthly visit doesn't have to mean complete discomfort; try cloth pads!

Each week we'll be featuring one of Kelly's Closet's/ leading ladies. We've had the pleasure of working with them and we thought you'd enjoy a behind the scenes peek at the individuals who make it all possible.

Today we're featuring Karley.

Karley is Kelly’s Closet’s Shipping Department Manager and helps make sure all the orders are correct before they are processed, packaged and shipped. She also handles returns, customer service and is charged with keeping the inventory up-to-date so it’s as accurate as possible at all times. She has been with Kelly’s Closet for two years.

Karley lives with her cat, Hunter and loves desserts – any desserts! Here’s a bit more about Karley:

What inspires you? People.

If you were a CD brand, what would you be and why? I would be a Planet Wise Wet Bag because they are stylish and practical, like me!

What are four words your mother would say describes you? Independent. Giving/Loving. Stubborn. Intelligent. These came straight from the source!

What do you do in your spare time? When I have time, I like to dance, garden, create fashions for people and the home, and watch movies. Of course I enjoy spending time with my family and friends too!

What is your favorite movie? The Princess Bride

Favorite book? I’m a sucker for anything by Stephen King. One product you can’t live without? Toothpaste, of course!

What is the best part about working for KC? Besides being able to work with wonderful people, I really like that I’m able to set my own hours.

Tell me one thing you want everyone to know about you. That I try very hard every day to get our customers what they want. I also try to live as green as possible, recycling, reusing and hang drying clothes. I get excited when I can find a second use for something rather than just throwing it in the trash.

It's Karley's birthday today so wish her a Happy Birthday!!

Fluff Up Your Cyber Monday Sale

Last month I placed my first fluff order in several months, in it, a diaper I couldn’t wait to try out… Smartipants One Size Diaper. I was thrilled when my order arrived; I couldn’t get the diaper washed and prepped soon enough. I read so many great things about this new diaper and I just had to try it out for myself. I was intrigued by its relatively low cost of just $14.95 (insert included), as well as the fact the diaper featured a snap closure which I prefer over hook and loop (aka velcro). I was also interested in testing the ability of being able to wash the diaper without removing the soiled insert first.

Once my new diaper was washed and ready to go I put it to use on my 19 month old son, Brendan. The fit was very similar to my bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diapers; I was quite pleased in that respect. After the first diaper change I felt funny just tossing the wet diaper in the pail without first removing the completely soaked insert. As most first time Smartipants users probably feel, I was somewhat hesitant to try washing it without removing the insert, but I figured it was worth a shot. When wash day rolled around two days later I was pleasantly surprised to find that yes indeed, the insert fell right out in the washing machine and my new Smartipants diaper was as clean as new.

In addition to the ease of washing, I love the snap closure and super trim fit. Initially I wondered if the single row of snaps would hold the diaper sufficiently without wing droop. I’m happy to report the diaper passed the test with flying colors. Not only did the diaper fit on my son wonderfully, it also fit fairly trim when using the insert that came with the diaper, as well as an additional hemp insert for extra absorption (Brendan is a very heavy wetter). While I've read some comments from other moms who thought the diaper was as bulky as the bumGenius One Size diapers, but in our case, it was more trim. Brendan is 26 pounds and wears the largest settings, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Despite the fact I have a much bigger fluff stash than I really need, I am looking forward to adding a few more Smartipants diapers to my rotation. When we’re out and about I imagine they would be my top pick to take with me since I would simply dump my wet bag into the diaper pail or washing machine when I got home – no more digging through a wet bag and pulling wet, cold inserts out of my pocket diapers.
