My hubby had yet to fully change a cloth diaper. He’s changed a few disposables back in the day with our daughters, but never a cloth diaper. I’ll give him credit for trying... once or twice he’s attempted to change our son when he was a newborn only to discover a prefold and diaper pins; the buck stopped there! Although I tried to convince him I have more "daddy friendly" options to choose from - he leaves the joy of changing cloth diapers to me.

Last weekend after I awoke from a very late nap I realized Ilyas needed a diaper change. He was wearing the same diaper since nap-time. As I called Ilyas to come over to me, my oldest daughter said, “Abi already changed Ilyas.” (Abi is the Arabic equivalent for “my daddy”)

Completely puzzled, I replied, “What? When?”

Surely my hubby didn’t change his diaper. Furthermore, he didn’t possibly use a snap closure diaper! I could have sworn the diaper my son was wearing was indeed the same diaper I put on hours earlier.

“He changed him in the backyard. Ilyas had poopy. Abi washed him with the hose. The diaper’s still in the grass.”

I needed to see this to believe it. Sure enough, laying in the grass next to the hose was the dirty diaper. Hubby managed to not only change a cloth diaper, but a poopy diaper to boot, without even being asked to do it!

Now, I personally would have asked the girls to bring some wipes rather than use the hose...but leave it to Daddy to find a more convenient, and comical alternative. Hubby did a wonderful job with fastening the new diaper! Of course, the bumGenius Organic All-in-One diapers couldn't possibly be any easier to figure out; they're always conveniently ready to go!

UPDATE: As of 11/01 my hubby has changed an additional poopy diaper - and he even managed to take his skills one step further and attempted to rinse the diaper with our diaper sprayer. Of course he left the diaper behind in the sink - but bless him for trying!

Often we hear from customers advising the initial start up cost for cloth diapers can be quite daunting - after all, there are many other “big ticket” baby items one usually needs such as car seats, baby carriers/slings, strollers, bassinet/crib.

Quite surprisingly, cloth diapering on a budget is definitely doable. First, you’ll need to determine what your cloth diaper preference is; do you want to use all-in-one’s, pocket diapers, fitted diapers, or good ol’ prefolds and diaper covers?

Prefolds and covers are one of the most economical cloth diaper options available to parents. You can easily cloth diaper your little one for $100-$150 using prefolds and covers. bumGenius is launching a new diaper product called Econobum - delivering a cost effective cloth diaper option with the simplicity of prefolds coupled with the well loved fit and design of the bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diaper. Be sure to check out all the options - and remember, with cloth diapers it’s okay to use a little of this and a little of that!

Not fond of prefolds and covers? Prefer the convenience of all-in-one’s s, pocket diapers, or fitted diapers? While these diapers are generally more expensive options - all hope is not lost!

Consider setting up a gift registry for the items you need/want. This allows your family and friends to help share the initial cost and allow you to reap greater savings from your decision to cloth diaper!
Make purchases little by little. If your budget doesn’t afford you the ability to make one big purchase - set yourself an allowance and make small monthly purchases until you have all the diapers and accessories you need.
Don’t be shy; participate in all our giveaway opportunities (our blog, Twitter, and even Facebook)! Winning FREE diapers and/or cloth diaper accessories will greatly reduce your cost; moreover, providing you with a little fun while keeping up to date on the latest fluffy news!

Kelly’s Closet has regular promotions - whether free shipping, 5% off or even $5 off - you can still get a great deal without having to splurge on your diaper stash all at once. Ah, the elusive perfect nighttime diaper. *Cue strange nature program music here* I’ve heard tales of the existence of the perfect night diaper, but were they real or merely a fantasy conjured up by other mothers desperate for a good night sleep? *Big, scary nature crescendo* A few months ago, I set out to separate fact from fiction, fantasy from reality, and find the perfect night-time insert/diaper for my little boy.

I started my quest with micro-terry fiber. It’s simple, cheap, and best of all, I already had it on hand. Unfortunately one insert was not enough to hold Ian through the night, even when he was only a few weeks old. So I tried two inserts, then three. Three inserts worked like a charm, but looked silly and uncomfortable. As you can see from the picture, Ian did not like this arrangement. His bum was so big all the blood rushed to his poor little head. Clearly this was not the perfect solution.

Next I tried the Blueberry One Size Diapers. Several people raved about the near flawless design and the included insert with a combination of micro-terry fiber and hemp. I was hopeful this diaper might just be the one! I prepped the inserts, washing them several times so they would reach maximum absorbency – especially needed for overnight. Ideally we’re hoping to go through the night, roughly 12 hours!

Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to hold my little one through the night. (In all fairness, the inserts that come with pocket diapers are only designed for daytime use for roughly 2-3 hour stretches – they were not designed for overnight – especially for a heavy wetter!). The Blueberry One Size diaper and insert worked great for overnight if coupled with an additional micro-terry insert. Unfortunately, however, this brought me back to the “giant bum syndrome.” So I continued my quest!

I contemplated using wool, however, I discovered my son had eczema so wool was out of the question. However, I’d still recommend this option for those of you looking for a nighttime solution!

Finally, I tried some hemp inserts. Hemp holds a significant amount of fluid while still remaining trim. This is just what Ian needed to last through the night without a great big bum! I ordered two different brands, BabyKicks Hemparoo Joey Bunz Insert and the Hemp Babies Little Weeds, and waited anxiously for the mailperson to arrive with my package. When the package arrived I immediately prepped the items so I could use them that night. However, I had my doubts because the inserts/doublers were so much thinner than I’d imagined. I honestly couldn’t see something so thin working for him after all the bulk of microfiber didn’t quite work.

Nevertheless, we tried one hemp insert that night anyway and my little one looked comfortable! No giant butt! I put him to bed and hoped he would stay dry all night!

Ian awoke several times, as always, but stayed dry. I kept feeling him for wet spots and didn’t find any. The next morning came and he was still dry! We finally found our nighttime solution! If you’re still looking for a solution – keep trying new things! You may have a little trial and error but your solution is definitely out there! Good luck!
