When I first started looking into cloth diapering my son, I wanted the easiest way to go.. Prefolds and Snappis frightened me at first; I didn’t think I would stick with it if I went that route. So I started out with pocket; my first diapers were FuzziBunz pockets, bumGenius pockets, Haute Pockets, and Starbunz diapers. I wanted diapers that would be daddy and grandparent friendly so I wouldn’t have to be the only one changing diapers. Pockets fit that perfectly and I was sold!

When my son came along I was over the moon to put him in cloth and see that fluffy little bum! All 7lbs 11oz of him fit into the diapers that I had, which I was thrilled about! It was pretty easy to just snap or Velcro the diaper on. I wanted the easiest way possible, even more so in those days of no sleep, and it looked so easy to just put the insert in the pocket. Daddy was sold on the diapers after that first diaper change and seeing how easy it was. Once he also saw how much money we were saving not having to run to the store to buy diapers like we did with our first son, he wished we would have cloth diapered from day one!

After a little while, I got more willing to branch out to other diapers, I added some fitted diapers into my stash, which worked great for around the house when I wanted his little bum to get some air, I would just leave him coverless unless we were going out.

Even now that he is almost 4 months old, we’re still figuring out what we like and don’t like and trying different types of diapers. Starting out with the pockets for him as a newborn really was my best choice; they made cloth diapers seem so easy and got me hooked! I also had so much fun seeing his little bum in all the cute diapers, they really are as easy as disposables.

My little one is a heavy wetter at night, so finding a perfect night-time diaper solution was bit of trial and error until we could find a solution that would work and be leak-free. Initially I started using our pocket diapers with the inserts the diapers come with. Unfortunately we problems with the diaper wicking and leaking in the middle of the night, so the hunt was on to find the perfect option for us!

I tried doubling up the microfiber inserts, however, it just made the diaper so bulky and we still had some wicking issues. After researching insert options I decided to try some hemp inserts inside of our bumGenius pocket diapers. I used the one size microfiber insert the bumGenius diaper comes with and a large hemp insert. Thankfully the diaper wasn’t too bulky; but I had serious doubts if the diaper would hold up all night! Anxiously waiting to see if I’d find a damp baby, I was pleasantly surprised to find no leaks! The hemp and microterry fiber insert combination held everything for the full 12 hours he slept! I was thrilled, and went right to the computer to order a few more inserts.

I also wondered if I could add a hemp insert into a fitted diaper and see if it would hold up all night. I debated with myself whether to try it, afterall, did I want to mess with the routine that was working so great for us. Ultimately I gave it a shot and put him in a Bagshot Row Bamboo fitted diaper with a hemp insert stuffed in between. For a little extra protection I used a fleece cover and put my little one to bed. This time I was hopeful it would work and was happy to find a dry baby!

I now have 2 successful night-time solutions for my heavy wetter. I don’t think I will try anything else for a while unless I start to have issues down the road.

We all love the look of brand new, soft, clean fluff in our mail box, right? It can sometimes be so difficult to keep it looking that fresh and new, especially after several months of repeated use. I've found several things to do to keep my 15 month old cloth diaper stash looking white and bright. First of all, I try and rinse off the diapers immediately after a diaper change. Second, I don't let the dirty diapers sit in the pail for more than 3 days. Then, in addition to my normal wash routine, I try and strip them using OxiClean (regular, not the "free" or baby versions) every three weeks or so. This not only helps keep buildup to a minimum, it also helps whiten the inserts as well as the liner of my pocket diapers.

During the summer, I also have another trick that works wonders...the sun. I love hanging my diapers out on the line to dry in the sunshine - they bleach naturally and any left over stink that has built up usually just disappears. Since line drying tends to make the diapers and inserts a bit rough and "crunchy", I toss them in the dryer for a few minutes to fluff before I fold/stuff them for use again. I've noticed my hemp inserts in particular get extra crunchy, so I usually just fold and squish it in my hands before tossing it in the dryer. The inserts don't come into contact with my son's skin therefore I'm not too worried if it isn't as soft as if I had dried it in the dryer to begin with. By following this routine, I not only have extra clean looking diapers, I also save some money by not running the dryer as much in the summer time.

We are back from our exciting trip to Vegas attending the ABC kids show! Our trip was amazing! Not only did we see new "fluffy" products that will be coming to our stores soon but we were able to connect with manufacturers. It is so nice to put faces behind the products that we purchase.

This year I attended along with my shipping dept.manager, Karley, my husband Scott, and my 15 month old Riley. We left last Sunday, Sept. 13th. Riley traveled wonderful on the way out. We had 2 flights. One from Portland to JFK and the other from JFK to Vegas. I was amazed at how well Riley handled both flights. He certainly has earned his "travel wings". He has flown 9 times since he was born.!

I know many of you had fun guessing what Riley was wearing for cloth diapers each day. Yes- we cloth diapered in Vegas. We stayed at a Residence Inn so we had access to laundry facilities. The week before our trip I sent out a box via UPS of cloth diapers, wipes, and flushable liners. So what did Riley wear in Vegas? He wore Smartipants (our new fave),bumGenius sized aios, bumGenius one size 3.0's, and FuzziBunz One Size. Honestly, we loved the Smartipants the best. What I liked is that I didn't have to worry about pulling out an insert out of the diaper and they dried super, super quick.

Now you may ask- did I use disposables? Yes, I did. The night before we left I washed all of Riley's diapers so that evening he was in a disposable. You know what? The disposable leaked- honestly! Another feather in the cap for cloth diapers!

I also have to put in a plug for a wonderful company I used in Las Vegas. I rented a few items (high chair,crib,toys,etc) from Las Vegas Baby Equipment Rentals. I ordered what I needed right on their website and received a confirmation within hours. When we arrived at the hotel the items we rented were waiting for us behind the front desk. I originally requested a crib through the hotel. Unfortunately they were all taken. (I didn't realize that cribs weren't guaranteed when you book a hotel reservation.) My husband called Raquel of LV Baby Rentals and within 1 hour a portable crib was delivered. I was so impressed especially as it was Sunday evening. All items were super clean. I would highly recommend using them if you are traveling to Las Vegas.

We stayed an extra day in Vegas to play a bit. My husband arranged for Karley and I to go on a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam. He redeemed some reward points from hotel stays and we were able to go for free (a $600 savings-woo hoo). We had such a blast! The only thing is I wished our entire staff was there! I missed them all!

My husband Scott and I were able to go out to a nice dinner one evening while Karley watched Riley. It was a much needed date as we haven't been out to dinner alone since Riley was born.

I have to also give a big thank you to the gals who "held down the fort" while we were away. Thank you so much Serena, Jill, Deedee, and Janet!
