The Swim Diaper Trials

On our recent vacation to St.Barts I was so excited to use our swim diapers early then expected. In Maine the water just isn't warm enough to go swimming until the end of June.

My 11 month old Riley just loves his baths so I was assuming he would love the warm Caribbean water (I thought wrong- keep reading!) . I grabbed the Imse Vimse Swim Diaper in Size Large that we used at the older kids birthday swim party in February and went to the back room of the shop and pulled a Bummis Swim Pant in size Medium Sea Lions. Check...2 more items packed on my list.

Our first full day in St.Barts we woke up and had a wonderful breakfast. All sorts of homemade breads and croissants and the butter- was just divine! (No I didn't stay on my Weight Watchers diet!) After breakfast we went back to our room and changed. I put Riley in his new Bummis Swim Pant and we went to the pool which was overlooking the ocean. After finding a couple good lounge chairs with umbrellas to shield some of the hot sun and thoroughly applying the sunscreen Scott scooped up Riley and I trailed behind with the camera. Our little guy stood ankle deep in the pool and didn't want to go further. He just didn't want to go in...however I did get a couple of cute pics of him which was most important. I found the Bummis was very, very trim on him- like a glove. I am not sure in another few months he might try to pull it off as it does fasten with velcro but then again swim season in Maine is for only 2 months-June and July.

A couple of days later we went to a beautiful beach called Saline. This time Riley was sporting his Imse Vimse Swim Diaper in Black Lizard. He was in a size large which I really should have him in a medium. He now weighs just a hair over 20lbs. I do like that it is a pull on pant and wouldn't have to worry about him "stripping" off the diaper. Upon looking at the Imse Vimse Swim Diapers you would think that they are way to small but once you put them on your child you will see that they fit just wonderfully and are meant to have a more snug fit. Scott walked Riley over to the edge of the water and this time his sent out a screech. Wow..it was loud! There was NO way he was going into the water.

I think the Imse Vimse Swim Diaper will last longer as there are no velcro closures and it is better for an older baby/child who might be curious enough to try to "strip". The Bummis is more ideal for a newborn to infant right before they realize there is velcro to play with. So essentially our experience with swim diapers had no water action (LOL!) involved but at least I now know how each on fits!

This summer have fun at the beach, pool, or at my house--the bath tub!!!

Thanks for the reviews on the two swim diapers! I wavered back and forth before ordering a bummis swimmi. My little one hasn't discovered velcro yet, so we'll see how long we last before she does!

Sounds like a fun vacation. We are planning a beach vacation this summer and I hope my daughter will actually get in the water. :)

I love the Bummis Swim Pant...they fit my son perfect. I also found that although it is velcro...it seems stronger so maybe they won't undo it themselves:)

What a cutie! We went to St. Barts on our honeymoon. I just signed my daughter up for a mom and tot swim class and am wondering how she will like it. It seems like she will as she loves baths, but as you can attest, swimming and baths aren't the same.

LOL!! Too cute. Hopefully one day he will venture into more than just the pool water. I like the fact that both reviews posted talk about how trim these swim diaps are.

My oldest son was not a fan of the water but our youngest is all about it. Hes 16 months and has learned to streak with velcro so we would have to go with the pull on swim diapers from now on.

Great pictures Kelly. I have 3 Bummis swim diapers, small, med, and large and used all with my oldest and now my youngest (18 mo.) is using the large. They have been great and I have had no problems (ie. blowouts) while using them. With my 2nd I have always had swim trunks over the diaper but with #1 he just wore the swim diaper and got a very stylish tan :)

Thanks for the comparison! I am looking around for swim diapers for my daughters and wasn't sure which to buy. I am thinking Imse Vimse now : )

Too cute!!!! I'm still trying to decide which swim diapers we'll use this summer. Love the last picture!

Thanks for the review. Our swimming season is just about to start and we are in the market for some new swim diapers.

Thanks for sharing. I think I am going to have to get some swim diapers this summer . . . . we "live" at the pool in the summer.

Yes, I am so surprised he love the water especially as it was so warm!

My little guy had a similar reaction to the Atlantic when we were in FL in February...great for pictures though. (Of course, he was wearing his Imse Vimse swim diaper that I bought from KC!)

what a funny story and great vacation! My little guy loved our trip to the Gulf of Mexico, but hate the beach trip in Maine.

Still jealous you live in Maine!

Beautiful family. =)

I can't wait to try out my Bummis Swim diaper...tomorrow!!!

While it does have velcro, the great thing about having a girl is that you can put a swim suit over it if they start messing with the velcro.....but I think she will be SO distracted by playing that she wont even pay any mind to the velcro tabs.

Thanks for the comparison! I got an Imse Vimse for my 14 m/o son, and love it! It's so trim and no velcro to rip off (which he's been doing a lot these days with his Bumgenius!) I think I'm going to order another IV, so we have 2 for the summer. =)

Thanks for the review of the diapers! We have one swim diaper bought, but I've been trying to decide if I should get both the same brand, or try a couple different ones...decisions, decisions!

Your little boy is so cute! The diapers both look wonderful!

wow! Wouldn't even have thought about the velcro! Thanks!

Just to throw this out there, the best thing for sandy feet like that (or sandy anything else) is baby powder. It dries it up so it brushes off rather than having to rub it off (which hurts)

Thanks for reviewing these... can't wait to try them myself.

I didn't even know about these swim diapers. I'm going to have to look them up now to see if they have them small enough for my little guy! Thanks!

looks good! i agree, a dipe with velcro could be tough for a toddler who might want to pull it off!

We have the bummis swim pant but I have always wanted to try the imse vimse one! Not sure if it would fit well with my skinny mini though. His pants don't stay up without a cloth diaper on in the first place :)

He looks really cute in his swim dipes. We just got an extra large for my son and I was worried that it looked small, but your comments reassure me!

Imse Vimse has gotten good feedback...I need to give them a try!

I can't wait to try swim diapers this summer. I feel I need a new one a more girly one, but that will take some hubby convincing

My son is able to pull off the velcro on the Bummis Swimmi, but we just put a pair of swim trunks over them now! You don't get to see the swim diaper, but at least you also don't get to see what might be inside!

My favorite is the sandy foot picture :) And I use the Bummis Swimmi!

Kimberly said...

Even if he didn't swim in his diapers, he looks adorable!! And I love the foot picture :-)

This makes me want to try the Imse Vemse Swim dipes. I love the fact that it doesn't have velcro, which my little man gets off every time!

I love the foot picture. My mom loves feet so much I'd swear that half of the photos she's taken of her new grandson are of his feet.

Thanks for the confirmation! Last week I received the two Imse Vimse swim diapers for my son (around 20 lb.) and ALMOST sent back the size medium for a large because they seemed too small. They've fit great on him during his recent swim lessons, and I'm very pleased with them, so I'm glad I didn't send them back. It's nice to hear someone else thought the same thing and that I was probably right to stick with the medium. Thanks!

Great reviews! I'm getting ready to get swim diapers, so this was perfect timing:)

Thanks for the comparison. I am always curious about the fit!

I am really looking forward to trying out our swim diaper! I already have one kid that hates the water, and one that you can't keep put of it (we live at the beach), so I am VERY curious what the third is going to be like!
Great pictures, I love the last one and can just imagine the plea to get it off of his feet!

I have one of the Bummis Swimmis and although I LOVE how it fits my son pooped in it the FIRST time he wore it. The diaper did an wonderful job keeping all the nasty in but the diaper still smells after washing 2x. Any suggestions for me? We are thinking about cloth for #4 (on the way!!) so I am new to all of this....

Serena said...

Lydia: How are you washing the diaper cover? I'm assuming since you mentioned you're thinking about using cloth for #4 and being new - that you aren't currently laundering cloth diapers...

Typically we recommend running the soiled diapers through a cold wash (with a little detergent works best) - then run through a hot water wash (with detergent again - less is needed for cloth diapers) - you may opt to try and additional rinse.

Usually the diapers don't retain smells, especially if they've been laundered right away. How long did the diaper get stored before washing?

I hope this helps! Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns!
