We have had a few BAD rashes....and we've used everything from Mylanta (yes you read that right..in original flavor, applied directly to the rash) to Northern Essence Diaper Rash Slave (which we love). Determining that our son had a very sensitive rear end was quite the adventure :)

You know, I haven't actually used any product on the VERY FEW diaper rashes we've had since cloth diapering. When they have occured, we just make sure to be extra diligent about keeping Sierra dry. That seems to have worked. They've all disappeared on their own within a day or do.

We haven't dealt with diaper rash since we starting CDing!! BUT...we did have an allergic reaction, which we treated with Vitamin E oil. We put a barrier layer of flannel between her and the diaper (which was recommended by our ped even with disposables).

We deal with rashes in several ways: change more frequently, use bamboo exclusively (when the rashes are bad it seems to help), a bit of A&D, a wipes solution I bought from Etsy, and airing out frequently. Obviously we don't do all of these at once - that would be overkill. (:

We go through bouts of diaper rash. I typically just lather my son up with Vaseline and put a fleece liner in his diapers in order to protect the lining.

Almost 100% of the time, the rash is related to the inserts needing to be bleached. Once that's taken care of, the rash goes away on its own.

Thanks!

So far, we haven't had problems with diaper rash since switching to cloth diapers. We did have rashes occasionally when using disposables. We used Burt's Bees products then.

Katie said...

Sometimes we switch to a disposable and use diaper cream (Burt's Bees) - and sometimes I just try to let her air out... also use a fleece barrier between her and the cloth diaper sometimes so we can still use a little diaper cream. I haven't tried many other brands, but I'd love to!

My baby had horrible rash issues in disposables! It was the primary reason I looked into cloth. Since switching, we have not had any problems with diaper rash! Of course, on Sundays we have to put her in disposables in the church nursery and even just a few hours brings the little red bumps!

When I switched to cloth our rash nightmare ended....until teething came along. My DD has never been one to drool outwardly like many other babies so because of her constant swallowing of saliva she has gotten some pretty nasty rashes.

The question is what cream haven't I tried? LOL I went through about 6 different creams/ointments before finally landing on the Natural Baby Companies MAGIC STICK. (which is how I actually found Kelly's Closet and this WONDERFUL blog).

I have spoke raves about this stuff on here before and I will do it again. It really is like Magic. When I got it in the mail my DD had a really nasty rash that had been quite persistent. After only 2 diaper changes w/ the MAGIC STICK her rash was nearly gone and healed. I was amazed and relieved.

I generally put it on at bed time to help protect her super sensitive skin from any overnight poo's and if she gets rashy during the day I will apply it and then its usually gone by the next diaper change.

(sorry this is long...I just love it SO much that I have allot to say about it...lol)

The bonus on top of all of that is that you don't even have to touch the ointment or touch their bottoms. You just rub it on like deodorant and your done. It also has a really pleasant aroma, kind of sweet and fruity.

I have 2, one for the changing table and one for the diaper bag. They last a really long time, I bought mine back at the end of Dec. (I think) and I still have plenty left in both sticks.

Oh and they say it's safe for Cloth Diapers! What more can you ask for?

I have dealt with a couple of rashes since we started using cloth diapers. California baby is now one of my FAVORITE and I have had no problems using it with my diapers. Unfortunately right now one of my boys has a yeast issue down there and I am having to use paper diapers to keep from ruining my cloth.

We have been extremely lucky in the diaper rash department. C has only ever had one, and it was before we switched to cloth. Then, we were using Bodreaux's Butt Paste, which worked great.

I'm really interested in the Gro Baby system. I always hesitate with OS dipes. C is so big, they just don't fit him for that long. he's only 5 months, and we already have to use the BGOS fully unsnapped!

I have seen a huge drop in diaper rash since I started cloth diapering my daughter. On the rare occassions that her fanny gets irritated, I simply let her wander around bare-bottomed for a while. The fresh air always clears up the irritation within 30 minutes! If I am worried about accidents, I put her in a BumGenius bamboo fitted diaper with no cover as that lets her fanny breath. I haven't had to use any rash creams since I switched to cloth.

I deal with rashes from time to time. Kind of a bummer because I thought I wouldn't have diaper rashes if I used cloth, but my daughter has really sensitive skin so they were/are probably inevitable. Her rashes, I think, tend to be food related. Always after a bowel movement. She can be in a diaper 14 hours overnight that is absolutely saturated, and not even a little red. If I don't get a poopy diaper changed right away, she will probably be red, and sometimes a rash. I use either Target's Method diaper cream or California Babies diaper cream. I have read on other cloth diapering blogs that they are safe for cloth diapers, and I have had no staining or absorbency issues since using them. But I try to head off any rashes with frequent diaper changes and a little naked bum time so her tush can air out. I can always tell if she is going to have a rash if she starts crying when I put her on the changing table, and it just breaks my heart.

We never dealt with one diaper rash while my son was a baby in cloth diapers- they were just totally gone! It wasn't until he was a toddler and started having VERY acidic pee that we began to get ammonia build-up in our dipes. I tried everything and my only solution that mostly worked was boiling my dipes about once a month.

Rashes.... oh man. My son is very prone to rashes. I think that cloth does help them, but if we don't know he pooped or something and poop stays on his bum longer than a couple of minutes, his little tush turns bright red :( He has even had peeling skin, bleeding, and a huge open wound due to rashes. I fought using a zinc oxide cream for so long because I was scared to ruin the diapers but I finally did it. Usually, about once per week he'll have a rash that requires some barrier/zinc oxide cream. We just put one of his flannel wipes that I made inside the diaper and lather him up with cream (butt paste or desitin). I haven't had a problem yet with this method! And it keeps his bum happier :)

Since we switched to cloth diapers for our 2 older daughters, the only time we've had any issues with diaper rash is 1. when they are at their grandparents, who sneak sposies on them and 2. when I use terry-lined diapers on my oldest (like the motherease trainers we have). In our first order from Kelly Closet, we received a trial sample of Northern Essence Better Butter Cream, and that is what I've used... it works wonders! I usually line the diaper with a cloth liner to keep the cream off the inside- and prevent buildup that would interfere with the absorption. Our favorite cream when we used sposies was Boudreau's Butt Paste (I just think the name is funny!), but there really hasn't been any need for any cream since the switch!
