My funny story was actually repeated again this morning at my daughters one year checkup. We have to strip baby down to diapers for weighing. I did so, only to have the nurse tell me I needed to remover the blue pants. I explained those blue pants were actually her cloth diaper. Again, the nurse seemed confused. Finally she understood that it was a cloth diaper and they come in many colors. Again, I had the oppurtunity to explain cloth diapers. I know cloth diapers aren't exactly mainstream (yet!) but I would expect at a pediatricians office that sees I don't know how many babies, I wouldn't be the only one using cloth.

My husband thinks I'm obsessed with cloth diapers. He can't believe that I check this blog every day, and constantly drool over the new stuff at Kelly's Closet. It's funny, in a way, that I'm so into something that I used to think was just a necessary evil until the kids potty trained! I'm so excited to cloth diaper our next baby from birth :-)

Yesterday, my little bug learned to pull off velcro tabs! He was climbing around with half a diaper on while I was trying to catch up with him. Guess I need to only use our snap diapers now!

UGH STUPID MOMMY DIDN'T DO THE WASH! Ok *mommy brain working fast & hard* ding ding.... I grabbed a prefold wrapped it around an insert & said we will just put this in your underwear! He tried & couldn't get it in so I was helping him & he starts laughing so hard & says he's got a monster booty! My other 2 are just giggling away I start cracking up. Ya he was right it def gave him a bigger booty than normal..... all the diapers are washed & drying as we speak *sigh*

I don't know how I forgot about this story. I decided to take my 9 month old baby to the mall with me. I went to a clothing store and picked out some clothes to try on in a dressing room. Well, while I was in there I noticed DD had started leaking out of her CD. I didn't want to wait to change her until after I had tried things on and checked out. So, I decided to try and change her in her stroller. BAD IDEA! Getting the diaper off was the easy part, but then she started to squirm all over and up the back of the stroller. It was impossible! It was a small room without anywhere to sit or lay her, so I ended up throwing her over my shoulder and tried to put the diaper on her one handed, which is reeeally hard! She was screaming her head off, goodness knows what the people in the store were thinking. Diaper somewhat on and back in the stroller, I gave her a juice bottle and everything was fine. Never doing that again!

Funny thing that happened with cloth diapers: My daughter is 22 months old & our granddaughter is 18 months old, when my son changes his daughter at our house, my daughter will bring him a cloth diaper & try to get him to put it on his baby. She wants her neice to have "REAL" diapers too.

Amanda said...

Well, two small funny things...

1.) When DD was in the diapers w/ Velcro closures she figured out how to take them off pretty early on so I started keeping pants/shorts on her all the time...less than a week later she figured out how to un-do the Velcro tabs under the pants! We have since switched to snap closure diapers.

2.) If I change DD on the floor instead of the changing table she pulls a fast one as soon as I have removed the diaper and takes off through the house. She loves to run around in her Nude-y Booty.

I lent my small size of Fuzzi Bunz to my friend in Canada but then forgot. Several months later I received a good size package in the mail from her and being from Canada it had the customs form on the outside which detailed what was inside. I noticed that is said it included $200 worth of diapers. I was so excited, only to discover they were the ones I had lent to her earlier. Yet some how it was still fun to have them back.

A funny cloth diapering story... hmm... it's hard to think of another one! Well, I think it's funny and like to laugh about how, when I was planning to use cloth, everyone said I'd hate it and wouldn't continue. And now I love it and will NEVER go back to disposable. It's also funny how there have been a couple people who I never thought would be converted who would like to use cloth!

Another funny cloth diaper story...humm... Well, I have several TK Cuddlers diapers that have s-hooks. My poor husband always has problems getting those off when he changes Brendan's diaper. He doesn't change many diapers, and I kind of chuckle at him when I can hear him in the other room fighting with the diaper...and then complaining that it's a stinky dirty diaper. Gosh, I don't know if he could handle a full day of diaper changes.

I do not have any funny stories to share of my own yet, as I'll be a FTM come August. But my sister who might actually be having her baby today is a mom of now five and has used cloth on all of them. From her I have heard many interesting stories, including her oldest (now 7) who came in the room mid diaper change, decided the smelly diaper could not wait for Mama to finish attaching a new diaper and went and put it in the toilet himself. Did not dunk it, just left it there. But at least he tried. lol That was about two years ago. So I'm sure by now, he's an expert.

My daughter has a habit of sticking her hand down the back of her pants. With cloth diapers, it's easier for her to get her hand down there. One evening, I went to change her and noticed she had poo on her hand and shirt, and realized she had stuck her hand down her diaper again. My husband had been holding her, and he had it all over the back of his shirt. As I was laughing at him, I noticed I had it on my shirt too. Ick!

Hmm, I think the thing I will remember the most about cloth diapering is not really that funny, but it just confirmed to me why we do it! This was when my now almost 3 y/o son was about 24-26 months and still in diapers, but he has spoken really well ever since he started talking.

Well, we had gone somewhere for two nights, and we were going to have a lot going on, so I decided to just use disposables. The kids did great, but as soon as we got home, my son ran to his room and said, "May I please have a COMFY diaper now?" and pointed up to where his cloth nappis were. :o)

Let's see...there is this one pair of pants that my daughter can only wear if she's in a cloth diaper - they definitely fall off otherwise (she's got a skinny butt). We were at a lacrosse game when I had to do an emergency diaper change and all I had in the car was some disposables (my emergency stash)...she spent the next hour running around holding her pants up - very amusing to watch!

Whenever my baby had diarrhea I had to get a sample in a cup to send to the lab. Well, unfortunatly she didn't poo at the doctors office, but on the way home I heard her poo grunting noises. I ended up pulling over and scraping what little of the diarrhea poo that was solid into the cup. These are things you never think of yourself doing before you have kids!

Since I don't really have many stories because we are so new at cloth diapering, I will spare posting the SAME story again.

But I will never forget when I just had my baby girl last September and my brother and his wife came to visit from Florida. They brought some gifts for us and one of them was a package of the Gerber Birdseye Prefolds that I had put on my baby registry. My SIL told us that my brother had been grossed out by the thought that I was going cloth diaper. But she pointed out to him that I would probably use them as burp cloths.
I said she was right, I was going to use them as burp cloths and before I could say anything further about thinking of actually cloth diapering, my Mom jumped right in with the explanation. She was all excited and ran to the baby's closet to get the one Mommy's Touch Pocket Diaper that I owned. My Mom was more excited about it than I was!
The look on my brother's and SIL's faces were priceless. They couldn't believe that I was actually going to use cloth!

Tara K. said...

I started cloth diapering with 3 KCKOnes I made and a dozen prefolds. My mom saw that I was not going to give up, so she purchased some supplies to make me and my sister some more KCKOnes. I was EVER SO Excited! A few days after she started sewing, she sent 3 diapers home with me. After laundering them, I was so excited to try the new dipes on my bambino. I couldn't wait for her to need a change. Finally the moment arrived, and I grabbed the first diaper. It was chocolate suede cloth inner with pastel yellow pul--made me think of a sunflower. Something was not right! I needed to stuff this diaper through the welt pocket opening, but the pocket was sewn shut! I grabbed the 2nd diaper she sent home with me, and tried to open it to stuff it when I realized the velcro had been sewn on after the diaper was made instead of before, so the welt pocket itself was able to open, but the velcro was sewn through both layers of pul and inner, so I could not stuff it. And the 3rd diaper she sent home was made the same way. I had a good laugh while the babums rolled over and crawled away until I could compose myself and get her another diaper on. I gave my mom a hard time about it and asked her not to make any more from her own improvised pattern.

My funniest story happens when I go to the peds office. We have to strip baby down to dipes for weight checks. The nurses always insist I take of the (insert color) thingy - baby must be in diaper. I always seem to end up going round and round with the nurses that we use cloth diapers and that whatever color she has on her bum is indeed her diaper.

I've been trying to think up a new story for each day...this is getting tough! Last year when I started considering cloth diapering I did a lot of research before mentioning anything to my husband. Once I had made up my mind that I was going to take the plunge and do it, I finally told him. The look on his face was priceless. He was surprised, a bit grossed out and not fully trusting that I would stick to it. He kept asking "what do you do with the poop?" Obviously, I did keep up with it, in fact, it's an addiction now...He loves to tease me about my funny collection of diapers. He seems to get weekly shipments of Legos he's purchased off e-bay to feed his hobby/addiction, so he really doesn't have a leg to stand on when talking to me about my cloth diapers.

Aisha said...

I don't have a funny story per se. other than it's been funny watching my husband learn the different diaper systems (including fitteds, AIO, and pockets)and how to stuff DD's nighttime diapers. After several misssteps, I think he has the hang of it now.

I thought of another story that I will never forget
.
I have been trying to find supplies to sew some of my own fitted diapers. I was talking to a (single) friend (with no children yet) on the phone one day and telling her about how I was going to make my own cloth diapers. I told her about some fabric that I found online that I thought was really cute and I couldn't wait to make some diapers out of it.
She laughed and said, "I can't get over the fact that you are spending so much time trying to find cute and nice fabric for your baby to poop in!"

That is when I realized how obsessed I am over cloth diapers and how ridiculous it sounds to other people. But I don't care!

So I find it amazing how baby poops can define how well my day will go. When my baby poops, there is no mistaking it. She gets that strained, grunty look that is usually followed by high pitched and distressed squealing. Then there is the mad rush to the changing table to get that poop OFF her bottom! The harder the poop, the louder and longer she squeals. This morning she had three poops, very evenly spaced throughout the morning, each bigger than the last. By the time I got her calmed down from one poop, she would poop again and the process would start all over. It wasn't until after her 2pm nap that everything kind of settled down. Phew!
